District and Charter School Cafeteria Staff and Nutritionists
Objective
District and charter school child nutrition staff need professional development just like other educational personnel, yet they can rarely step away from their daily responsibilities in order to attend a class or training session. ESC Region 11 helps meet their needs by providing a comprehensive training event during the summer for all child nutrition staff — from managers to line staff to cashiers! This conference provides the one-stop-shop they need for their annual professional development.
The training topics required for child nutrition personnel are not very exciting -- like kitchen math, food costs, recipe conversions, safe food handling, and food accommodations (allergies/disabilities). To "add some spice" to the agenda, our Child Nutrition specialists create a different theme for this summer conference each year. This year's theme took on a circus motif, and all of the visuals and topics were circus-related. We also had a hands-on "midway" learning experience for attendees.
Evidence of Success
The pandemic really did a number on our attendance/participation at this annual event. For the past two years, our attendance was dismal (less than 100 attendees) due to our less than ideal virtual learning environment. This year, everyone was ready to come back to an in-person event (350 attendees!), and our marketing materials helped create a sense of excitement, fun, and fellowship. Our graffiti wall was full of testimonies regarding the general sense of camaraderie and optimism.
